I was given the master VHS tapes while I was in Denver for the 2008 Roger Waters show because I assured Ken that I could extract the audio (linear stereo tracks) from the master VHS tapes.

Some notes from Ken G:

"We drove all the way from the SF Bay area to the East Coast in a 1970 Volkswagen bus to see this show. We were the only people in there with a video and the only person in there with a baby. Of course this was all way pre-internet, so we had no access to a seating chart or anything to see whether there were seats anywhere in Brendan Byrne Arena that were in the front row balcony, with nobody being able to stand up in front of us. Obviously it was going to be impossible to hold the camera up at eye level and in any case a tripod was the only way to go to eliminate shaking and not get caught. We somehow got access to a New York yellow pages and found some ticket scalping agencies. After making a couple calls we found out that there was one section where there was one side entrance to the coliseum style arena (where the elephants would come in for the circus, etc.) and there were about 10 seats along the top of that section. Amazingly, they had 3 seats for sale there, so we bought them (a friend who we met at the London 1980 Wall shows took the third ticket and held the mics). It took two trips through the door to smuggle everything in, as I had to go back out and come in with a second ticket (elsewhere in the arena) to bring in the 7 pound lead-acid battery belt. On the first trip in my wife took in the deck, tapes, mics and cables and I brought in the camera and tripod (one down each leg, with an Egyptian men's robe over them I was wearing). However, once we got to the seats it turned out that the opening we were over was roped off as security headquarters, with guys wearing yellow jumpsuits and holding walkie-talkies! So I set the stuff up and it was a few feet over their heads -- I put a jacket over the railing to hide the camera, which was at knee level. When the show started I started the tape and got down on my hands and knees to try and peer through the little round view finder (with my baby daughter kicking me in the head). All I could see was black, then some flashes and I realized that I was zoomed way in. I focused the camera on the performers, zoomed back to take in the entire 90-foot wide screen and had to leave it like that. There was no way whatsoever that I could have looked through it again during the show and zoom in and out, it would have been too easy to get caught. In retrospect I wish I had zoomed in to the main stage for the first set and adjusted for the second, but that didn't happen. My heart was pounding during the entire show, it was completely not enjoyable (fortunately, we had seen the night before from the floor and went to the Chicago gig after). For some reason I forgot to change the tape to number two before the second half -- hence the tape ran out just at the beginning of "The Moment of Clarity", the final short bit that ends the Pros and Cons. If it had to cut, that was a good place to do so. If I had it do to over again.....but then again I didn't have the chance. Glad to get what I did  - it was well worth the effort - and even though the video isn't great when the large screen is not on, the soundtrack is awesome throughout!

Geetarz Comments:
A crisp, near perfect digital audience recording.
Only the size of the venue prevents this from being an 'Aud 6'.
Crowd noise is distant and not intrusive at all, and the sound is full and clear, without any top-end harshness or boominess.
The best recording available from EC's 1996 run at the Royal Albert Hall.
Not to be confused with the analog recording of this show in circulation.
Recommended.

Geetarz Comments:

The 1996 RAH shows featured an eclectic mix of old and new, acoustic and electric, blues and rock, and this show is certainly no exception.

A really unique performance of "My Father's Eyes" featuring a horn solo makes this one an interesting listen.

Geetarz Comments:

After nearly two years of hard-core, uncompromising blues, 1996 marked a return by EC to a mix of blues, rock, and pop.

1996 was a "bridge" year of sorts, as the majority of the band had been with EC through the blues tours, and brought a different sensibility and arrangements to some Clapton standards.

Here, the first concert of the 1996 run ...

Cover art incorrectly notes the date as 15 February 1996.

Good clear recording but unfortunately lots of echo.

   9. When the Levee Comes Crashing Down

Geetarz Comments:

An absolutely miserable audience recording, and best avoided.
Those expecting a fantastic guest session by EC on par with the "Duets" performance from later in 1996 will be sorely disappointed.

Notes:

This, the last of a three-night run at Irving Plaza at the end of the blues club tour,
is widely recognized as one of Clapton's finest live performances.  Clapton pulls out all
the stops and the crowd reactions near the taper are priceless - particularly during the
intro to "Early In the Morning."  Other highlights from this great set are smoking versions
of "Five Long Years," "Groaning the Blues," and "Have You Ever Loved a Woman."  This show
also features the only performance of "Black Cat Bone" on the entire blues tour.  Enjoy!

Geetarz Comments:

Okay, we're talking "essential", right?  After the success of the late 1980s and early 1990s - especially "Unplugged" - EC was finally free to pursue his passion, blues!  After testing the waters with some "all blues" nights at the Royal Albert Hall, and then the mixed blues/pop/rock sets from 1993, in 1994 it was time to jump in all the way.

After a long summer arena tour with a setlist consisting only of his favorite blues numbers, in early November Clapton set out on a mini-tour of not arenas, not sheds, but small clubs - the places where this music was born, and meant to be played.

The first three nights were also notable, as on November 7/8/9 they took place at the Fillmore, in San Francisco, and were recorded and filmed for a movie by acclaimed director Martin Scorcese.

This night, the first of the three night run, was recorded on videotape by the crew so that they could plan their camera moves and "blocking" for the remaining two nights.

The videotape source has been available to collectors in varying quality for years, and has been used as the source for several boots, perhaps the most notable of which is "Blues From the Heart" (Parrott / Red Robin).

The folks at 3BR obtained access to a very low generation, much cleaner source than used for "Blues From the Heart", and after a bunch of work, released the result as "Blues At the Fillmore" for fans.

Even if you already have a copy of this title, this may be a nice upgrade for you, direct from the masters with known lineage.

An incredible recording. Check this one out on headphones ... the stereo seperation provides a huge, 3-D soundfield.

An absolutely essential cornerstone of any EC collection - and packaged in an uber-cool license plate sized package.

Highly recommended.

Geetarz Comments:

Begins with EC saying "I'm just going to play blues ... I am in the right place" which of course the crowd goes nuts.

Also fun to hear the crowd react wildly to the line in "Kidman Blues" where EC sings 'Here I am in Chicago..."

RE-UP: Eric Clapton live in Cincinnati 1994 - 3CD - October 17

Eric Clapton

Geetarz Comments:

As usual on the 1994-1995 Blues Tour, the performance is exceptional; however, a poor recording means this one is for diehard collectors only - a pity!

Also has opening set (Jimmie Vaughan).

Geetarz Comments:
Got this in trade years ago, in a trade with the taper.
Please note, there are different copies of this in circulation from the master, mostly from the analog cassette era.
This version, from the master, is easily distinguished because it has 20 tracks on CD 1, and only 6 tracks on CD 2.
Even if you have a recording from this date, this may be a nice upgrade for you.

Geetarz Comments:
My favorite recording from the 3-night blues run at Madison Square Garden in 1994.
I've always loved the combination of the Sonic Mics and a D3 or D7, especially with the preamp mod. It's a rich, warm sound that today's "all digital" recordings seem to lack. Which might simply be due to the fact that the DAT decks of that day were expensive, especially in relation to the relatively "cheap" (in design and build quality) solid state recorders today.
As with most binarural recordings, this sounds great on speakers but fantastic on headphones.

This was a benefit concert in aid of the T.J. Martell Foundation, a charity that does research into leukemia, cancer, and AIDS research.
It was a one-off concert between the end of the Royal Albert Hall concerts in March, and the beginning of the "Nothing But the Blues" USA Tour in October.
This release dates from the end of the "Golden Age of CD ROIO's", on the "Lords of Archive" label.  The tax stamp is visible on the back cover.
The front cover inset has a 22-page mini-booklet with information about the Foundation.

Taper's Notes:

My flight was delayed by almost a day - so missed the original show I planned on attending. To avoid "touts" or scalpers I sat in the lobby of the RAH to see if anyone was going to return tickets. I got lucky. Harvey Goldsmith happened to stroll into the venue to walk around (he looked like he owned the place and some low level employee said "hello Mr. Goldsmith". I asked if he was returning tickets and he said no with a chuckle. Then he asked how long I had been waiting and I fibbed "all day, I just flew here from the states,  I missed last nights show". He said something at the ticket window and told me "come here" and that's how I got my tickets. I still had to pay but they were great seats.

The title was picked because I was quiet as a mouse while I recorded this and after the last solo of ANBIID and let out a huge yell, red lining the levels.

Recorded on Sony Metal Master Type IV ceramic composite tapes on a handheld Sony recorder with a stock mic.

Geetarz Comments:

Another great performance from the 1992 tour.

Of particular note is perhaps EC's best rendition of "Before You Accuse Me" - this is one occasion where the band really nail the "Bo Diddley Beat" rather than using more of a shuffle style.

Comments:
Great show. Begins with a great "White Room", very powerful.
"Running On Faith" features the neat EC/Nathan rhythm figure outro done on a few of the 1992 shows.
For "Sunshine" EC kicks into a really neat riff on the outro, before the drum / percussion solo, and the band jumps in and rolls with it for a bit.
Very good. CD set comes on nicely done picture discs.

Comments:
An excellent performance. Begins with a blistering "White Room", the entire band is in top form.
"Pretending" is excellent as well, in slightly different tempo and feel from the "24 nights" days.
A slightly uptempo version of "Sheriff" follows a great version of "Anything For Your Love".
"Running on Faith" features some expressive solos, as well as that outro rhythm figure EC and Nathan used during some of the '92 dates.
The crowd gets going with "She's Waiting", and really explodes when EC begins "Tears in Heaven".
Very listenable for an audience recording, obviously a smaller hall, not a stadium or other large venue.
Soundboard, pro shot video footage of this show undoubtedly exists, as parts of it are shown in the BBC Documentary "Curves, Contours, and Body Horns".
